The history of Lock 21 and the Swain Family will forever be intertwined. Swain Family members can be traced back to the original construction of the Canal, and their tradition of service at this lock house extended through the Canal’s most thriving decades and much of the 20th century.
It wasn’t always the best of times for the Swain family. They lived at the lock house through some of the worst events, including floods of 1889, 1936 (when many bridges were destroyed), 1942 and 1972. Jesse Swain was the lock tender when the Canal closed down in 1924, but other members of the family stayed on for many years after the C&O Canal became a national park. They even operated a popular concession stand for park visitors.
Swain’s Lock, built of red sandstone from Seneca, is still accessible on the berm side of the Canal. You can reach it by the towpath or from River Road via Swains Lock Road.

Jim Martin jumped into France over Utah Beach the night prior to D-Day and fought for thirty-three days in the Normandy campaign. In September, 1944 he participated in the invasion of Holland ("Operation Market Garden") and was one of the defenders of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. The 101st Airborne Division finished their part of the war by securing Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Two artists, Joyce Zipperer and Fae Penland, who love shoes and much more about women's fashions and adornments, were brought together at Art Space in Herndon, VA, for a two woman show. Joyce Zipperer is a well known sculptor, who works in metal. Previously, she worked in stone carving, styrofoam, graphics, costuming and painting.
Fae is an award winning fine artist that works with a variety of mediums including watercolor, ink, graphite, color pencil and charcoal.

Howard Hughes knew Raymond Loewy. So did Jack Kennedy, Walt Disney, Samuel Goldwyn, Fred Astair, Mary Lasker, Liz Smith and Jackie O. But to most of us, Loewy remains America’s best kept secret.
America’s first celebrity designer was the first to grace the cover of Time. Cosmo said Raymond Loewy has probably affected the daily life of more Americans than any other man of his time. To modern design enthusiasts he’s “the man who shaped America.” Loewy has been featured on 60 Minutes, PBS, A&E and recent segments of the Fine Living Channel.
Loewy’s highly acclaimed US exhibition, “Raymond Loewy: Designs for a Consumer Culture” opens at the Parish Art Museum in Southampton April 1st. What Frank Lloyd Wright did for architecture, Raymond Loewy did for industrial design.
Loewy, “the father of industrial design”, redesigned everything from the Coke bottle to Air Force One. When NASA wanted to send astronauts into space for extended periods of time, they called Loewy to develop the first interior living standards for space travel. Apollo astronauts first saw earth from a Loewy designed porthole. Loewy, the original Horatio Alger story, emigrated from France after WW1 with only forty dollars. With his good looks and design genius, he parlayed his pocket change into the first multi-million dollar industrial design firm. His successful offices in New York, London and Paris allowed him to live the celebrity lifestyle with designer homes around the world. Raymond and his beautiful, young wife Viola, socialized with presidents and titans of industry.
His motto MAYA, most advance yet acceptable has become a credo for aspiring young designers today.
Ross Stansfield Productions and Estate of Laurence Loewy created a Loewy documentary for the Loewy Gallery in Roanoke VA.

Studebaker Avanti 63R-1250 has been owned since 1990 by Avanti Magazine editor, Lewis Schucart. It is the 250th Avanti produced and is the 15th model that was made with a black exterior. It is also the first black Avanti produced with a black interior. Final assembly date of 9/13/62, shipped to Philadelphia, PA, and sold in October 1962 to a James E. Myers, a music producer, song writer, author, movie producer, and actor who co-wrote Rock Around the Clock, later licensed to Bill Haley & The Comets in 1954, becoming the first Number One record of the Rock and Roll era.
